IncrediEGGS! All day Breakfast at Yolk

For someone who grew up trained to never miss breakfast like I do, each day will never be the same if I can’t have my most wonderful meal of the day. My heart leaped literally when Angeli, a great friend/blogger of foodiecraft.com invited me to try this all day breakfast place at Mabolo Cebu city. Because I’m already free from school (I had to say no to invitations for the past months because of my internship), I accepted it (I can’t say no to you Anj, hope you’re reading this!) and I gracefully danced my way to Yolk.

Location:

80 Tres Borces Street, Mabolo Cebu City

It was really easy to spot, and not really far from the main road, it is situated at the back of Bread after bread, a bakery. The street is quiet, there are lamp posts around and the only jeepney that will pass by the street where Yolk is located is 03A that’s if you came from Mabolo Church or from city proper. The Jeepney 04L from SM or Ayala will only pass by the main street going to Panagdait Mabolo, you can cross the street and walk a bit, you can then spot Bread after bread, beside it is the small street going to Yolk. Now if you came from Talamban or Banilad, the Jeepneys 62B and 62C will also pass by there, you can stop by The Leona’s, cross the street and still walk a bit to spot bread after bread.

Location is only a walking distance to the Gallery and to Ayala.

Operating hours:

Yolk, is open for all day breakfast starting at 7:00 in the morning and closes at 10:00 PM. They are closed on Mondays.

Contact Details:

You can call, (032) 231 0411 for more details.

The Place: Wonderfully, wonderful

I arrived at around 6PM and still the guard greeted me a great morning, all day breakfast feeling was fuelling my soul of excitement about Yolk. Dainty studio lights welcomed me as I settled on a sleek modernish wooden table and across me was Angeli of Foodiecraft, Justinne of Babeforfood and Hoven from Sugbu.ph

Brick walls, wooden tables, and crafty decorations, including this very large world map lavished the entire space. With the effect of lights and neutral colors, this made the place cozier which made me really feel relaxed and pleased. Aside from the wooden chairs, they also have a comfty settee for 5 people where you can talk and chitchat while having your coffee, they also laid back magazines, books and placed really nice photographs within the selves attached to the wall.

That comfty style living

The Food: Hungry, hungrier, hungriest

We started with cups of coffee, of course. I had Latte (P 110. 00), Angeli had the Piccolo Latte (P100.00), Hoven had an Espresso (P90.00) and Justinne had Cafe Mocha (P130.00).

My Latte was blissful, I do love my coffee black but this one sets apart from the usual latte, it was delightedly light yet indulging.  Aside from mine, I also got to try the Cafe Mocha, this was really great, it was not too strong and not too sweet if I’ll be coming back next time, for sure, and I will have this one.

Latte <3

Cafe Mocha

Chorizo and eggs in a pan (P 310.00) was the first dish to served to us, the sizzles that the dish brought excite my senses.

To my delight, this dish was different from the chorizos I have tried before, not too salty and it was aided with basil too which makes it more special. It was amazingly good with the eggs, and it was better to pair up with toast and salad than garlic rice. Well, that's for me but Homos who are great rice eaters, a cup will never be enough.

This is the all beefed up, homemade slow cooked corned beef (P 310.00) it was served with potato hash and another runny eggs too! Did the sound of "SLOWCOOKED" stopped you in mid breath too? To tell you, three "T's" will sum up the goodness of this creation. "Tasty" , Tender", "Try mo na!" (You try it now).

The beef was heavenly tender, and twas matched up with potato hash and some eggs too! Runny eggs seem to nurture each dish on our table and I think I got lucky cause I love my eggs runny!

To complete the breakfast course, Eggs Benny was laid in front of us. I hope you see how substantial the serving is. A different zing was noticeable to the Eggs Benny, the chef used some lemon zest with the hollandaise which makes it more familiar to our palate. They used sourdough bread which makes it chewy and delectable.

Dessert, the finisher of them all. Two nice Espresso Panna Cotta's (P 90.00) were served for us. This was new to their Dessert menu which includes more and more mouthwatering items. The consistency was right the block, not to soft, not to hard, not too sweet but the espresso made it more unique.

Food for thought:

To top off, I really enjoyed the greasy night of bacon and runny eggs plus the healthy succor of salad and toast. The All Beefed up was my personal favorite among the three, but the Eggs Benny was memorable too! The Coffee too is worth the cup, it's pleasing and it felt like home. Yolk, brings the very best of each cup, Yolk wants to inspire people to inspire others with the language using food and coffee.

Why would I choose to go back at Yolk?

1. The real "All Day Breakfast" is here. Some eating places here in Cebu had been offering breakfast from 7:00AM to 10:00AM only, but at Yolk's, even if its 6:00PM you can always have your runny eggs served right in front of you.

2. Hefty Portions that are can be can be shared. Our choices varies, might as well share them to others.

3. Not just good but great and awesome coffee. They have excellent coffee served here at Yolks, I recommend you to try The long black, their specialty and the cafe mocha.

4. I was quite impressed with the quality of service they give to their customers, the crew were very attentive and knowledgeable. They are in pace with what they really do in their service.

5. The place can be passionate as you are. A great place not just for breakfast and coffee but a place to enjoy yourself, its peaceful, calming and cozy.

6. Innovation is the key. Yolk is trying to keep up with what people needs, they are continuing to expand their menu as for now, we could wait for that.

7. Mark your calendars, March 24, Tuesday they will start their coffee guesting! Head to Yolk for your coffee now! :)

Community welcomes arrival of clean toilets in “Fiesta” video

It's been a while since I posted something, Iv'e been studying my heart because I'll be an intern already in a big hospital here in Cebu! Anyways, I'll try to keep back on the blog track. Here's an article about a special day for our toilets not just at home but every toilet around. But before you read this article, click on the VIDEO here or the one below :)

XXX

It’s a scene typically played out during fiestas: People rushing to the streets, drawn to the sound of a marching band. Everyone is smiling, eager to see the “star” of the celebration. But instead of showing the face of a movie celebrity, a beauty queen or a politician, the video reveals an unlikely, yet welcome sight—a new, clean toilet facility.

Aptly titled “Fiesta”, the Domex video, produced by Unilever Philippines, is available on Youtube and shows how underprivileged Filipinos welcome the “arrival” of clean toilet facilities in their communities. “The video aims to make people realize the value of a toilet which most of us, unfortunately, take for granted,” said Dennis Chua, Domex Brand Manager.

The “Fiesta” video contributes to the efforts of Domex’s One Million Clean Toilets Movement. Each unique view translates into a pledge for the advocacy campaign which collects pledges from households to conscientiously maintain their own hygienic bathrooms. For every pledge received, Domex will donate P5 to UNICEF’s sanitation program, towards improving access to basic sanitation in deprived areas around the world, including the Philippines.

“By watching the ‘Fiesta’ video and asking our friends to watch it, we are not only raising awareness for toilet appreciation and sanitation, more importantly, we are helping less privileged communities gain access to clean toilet facilities,” said Benjie Yap, Unilever Foods and Home Care Vice President.

Clean toilets, germ-free communities

All over the country, people are welcoming the construction of new toilet facilities and the repair of dilapidated ones, since becoming aware of its role in disease prevention, especially among children.

According to the Department of Health, of the estimated 3,420 diarrhea-related deaths among Filipino children under 5 every year, around 2,000 could have been prevented by access to safe water, improved toilet sanitation and personal hygiene.

“This video should serve as a wake-up call for most of us. The little things we take for granted, like having a clean toilet, could mean the world to others and could definitely help save lives,” Chua said.

The wings and the wingman, Revealed!

If you have heard about DuzGrill, 10 Dove Street and Cul-De-sac, which are restaurants attached to a home inside a village, another add-up to the list of specialty restau-attached-to-a-house is Gibbs’ Hot wings. Owned by, Frank Oliva proprietor of Heart Tea Milk tea, he brings another hot, literally hot craze in town.  I know you’ll ask who Gibbs is; actually, Gibbs is the name of the Golden Retriever that Frank’s son owns, at first I also thought that it was a name of a family member but surprisingly it’s a dog, how great is that dog!

Details to remember before dining:

                          5:30-10:00 PM (Dinner) Tue-Sat

                          5:30-10:00 PM (Dinner) Sundays

Directions:

Following the directions above, we came up into a small driveway one night, and saw a signage that says “Gibbs’ Hot wings”, along with Zhequia of FTW and Fhebe, we all shared a night full of hotness and deliciousness. We were guided by the Owner Frank, throughout our meal and were also entertained by him and his insane wit.

He introduced the Chicken pockets with Chicken Salad to us, we were lucky to be one of the first few people to try this dish because her wife came upon this dish few days before we went there. You have a chance to choose whether, you will fill the pockets by yourself or just let them do it for you, I’d prefer doing it myself tho, and it’s a little itsy-touchy with your food before munching it.

The Chicken salad comprised with Cabbage, Cucumbers, Onions and Tomatoes which were very fresh because all were crunchy. The chicken was crispy and chock-full with flavour. We filled our Pita breads with the chicken salad and start tasting the quest within it, I’m one of those kinds who would like to have my Pita Bread a lil toasted to add crisp and flavour and so as my friend on the other side of the table Zhee loved it that way. But, even if the Pita Bread served to us was not toasted the mishmash of the Salad and the bread was vital, raging of flavours and bursting of the sweet dressing of the Salad was rumbling inside my mouth. It actually tasted like Shawarma but the owner preferred not to compare it with that because seemingly they are different, for me, the dressing me reminded me of that Shawarma, that little bitch. Hahahaha

Next, a sexy platter of hot wings with a dip was served in front of us.

Just three things before getting a hand of these deviously delicious buddies: Wash your hands. Brace yourself. Eat sexy (with bare hands! No knives and forks!)

I’ve already tried these beautiful and hot wings before, and I should say nothing has changed, it is still the Buffalo wings I fell in love with. There is hot for the nerds and insanely hot for the freaks (in fact the hot itself is very very very very hot) it is accompanied by a Garlicky dip which I assumed is a Garlic Ranch or anything closer to it because Frank doesn’t know the name of it. You could see how the hot sauce embraces the wings so just imagine the tender chicken and innocent combination of sweet and spicy sauce assimilates and forms an army of scrumptiousness ready to fill your craving. From a scale of 1-10, the Buffalo wings from Gibbs is eleven, this is ultimate.
He also introduced us to the newest add-up to their menu the Cream Cheese and Garlic Chicken. Tender chicken drenched with cream cheese sauce and topped with grated parmeasan cheese.

This dish was a blend of sweetness and saltiness; I’m not a fan of cheeses so I don’t really find this dish thaaaat alluring, the cheesiness was a bit over to me but I guess this dish wasn’t that bad after all because Zhee, preferred it than of the Buffalo wings.

To wrap things up in a small platter, the Chicken pockets with chicken salad is a good starter for your feast, Filipino’s as we know it, rice is good for everything so you can order one from Gibbs’ even if this is like an American turf because of the wings Filipinos can still rock the crib and enjoy the meal with our beloved carb. Lastly don’t ever leave the premise without writing around the walls of Gibb’s hot wings, you can write anything about the wings, the place and the wingman, Mr. Frank Oliva.

Atty. Ethelbert Quano named Mr. Frank Oliva as the newest Wingman of Cebu.

For a happy belly:
"Chicken Pockets with chicken salad"- P
"Hot wings"- P 175.00
"Cream cheese and Garlic chicken"- P 205.00

Zhee wrote for the first time, I wrote for the second time. We'll see the charm on the third time.

I don't own the fotos in this post. (c) Emma Zhequia of FTW blog

Be to places Safely with Technology- GrabTaxiPH

In a growing metropolitan like Cebu, the fastest way to be in places is through a cab. But how sure are we that our cabbie driver is not a mugger or a bad guy? This is just one of the things we have to consider in choosing a cab, luckily with the help of technology there’s an app that can help you find a good and trustworthy taxi driver. This might be far off from food but we also hire a taxi driver to bring us to the place where we spend our meal time right? How could we enjoy our meal if we had a reckless driver or a driver who took advantage of the area and took the long way for you to pay a larger bill or a very unfriendly driver who destroyed your mood because of his attitude? There’s still a connection to it right?

An app called GrabTaxi can help you in this. GrabTaxi is the largest Southeast Asian taxi-booking mobile app that can provide Cebuanos a safer, more secure and faster way of getting to their destinations. With the help of mobile data and a smartphone you don’t have to compete with other commuters and be in long taxi waiting lines in malls to get a cab, just take your smartphone out and book a taxi.

So this is how GrabTaxi looks like.

Just imagine how great this app is, in few clicks tadaaaaaaaaahhhh! you have a trustworthy cabbie driver in front of you .

So, here's a little "how-do-I-use-my-GrabTaxiapp"
